10 Years of Hospital Rooms
To mark its 10-year anniversary, Hospital Rooms unveils the next phase of its major nationwide programme spanning contemporary art, mental health and NHS partnerships across England. In July, the charity will launch 10 Posters for 10 Years – a nationwide campaign that will result in 1,000 NHS mental health hospitals in England being gifted a series of museum-quality contemporary art posters.
A total of 10,000 artworks will be distributed directly to acute, secure, and locked NHS wards throughout 2026 via the charity’s Digital Art School programme. The campaign aims to radically disrupt the sterile environment of psychiatric units, ensuring patients experiencing severe distress have immediate access to ambitious visual culture. The posters will be made available for the public to buy in a series of time limited sales to raise funds for the charity’s next season of transformative hospital transformation projects.
The initiative draws inspiration from historic civic art schemes, such as the postwar Public Works of Art Project and the iconic 1940s School Prints scheme, which sought to democratise access to culture by placing artworks directly within public institutions including schools and hospitals.
Hospital Rooms will present a significant anniversary exhibition at Victoria Miro this September. Titled Host|Guest, the exhibition explores the space between invitation, collaboration and care that shapes Hospital Rooms’ work with artists and mental health communities. Featuring artists including Lonnie Holley, Joy Labinjo, Mohammed Imran Khan, Xavier Laurent Leopold and Boo Saville, the exhibition will present re-creations of major new artworks created for hospitals this year, alongside work by collaborators from across the past decade of Hospital Rooms projects. The works on display were originally created for NHS mental health settings and are rarely accessible to public audiences outside the hospitals they were made for.
Host|Guest will culminate in a fundraising auction with Bonhams, featuring works by leading contemporary artists including Hurvin Anderson, Veronica Ryan, Do Ho Suh and Mary Stephenson, supporting Hospital Rooms’ Future Fund and the continued expansion of its work. Funds raised through the poster sales will support the Hospital Rooms Future Fund, helping to expand access to artist-led projects and creative programmes within mental health settings across the UK.
