The role of community spaces in young people’s mental health and community engagement – survey

Locality, the national membership network for community organisations in England, in partnership with Power to Change, is currently undertaking a project to explore the role of community spaces in young people’s mental health and community engagement. This work is happening as part of our membership of the government’s VCSE health and wellbeing alliance and is being undertaken with the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities.

As part of this project, we have produced a survey for VCSE organisations who provide spaces, services or activities for young people between the ages of 11 and 25.

This survey will enable us to start building up a picture of community level provision of mental health support across England and in particular an idea of the role which community spaces (everything from community centres to parks) play in the delivery of these services. It will further help us to understand the importance of these spaces in providing support and the types of impact they are having.

The survey is largely multiple-choice, with opportunities to expand on answers and should take no more than 10 minutes to complete. The survey will be open until Friday 5th August 2022.

The findings from this survey will be analysed alongside a series on interviews and in-depth action learning research to produce a set of nuanced policy recommendations. These will be specifically targeted at central government and the wider health system and focus on how they can better support communities’ work around mental health and protect the community spaces in which they take place.
