Bert Roman presents: Who Cares?
A wild, funny and tender queer dance-theatre show asking what care really means.
Blending his experience of choreography, performance, care and lived experience, London based dance-theatre artist, Bert Roman is performing a preview of his new show; Who Cares? At Jackson’s Lane, London on Friday 16th and Saturday 17th October.
Who Cares? is a playful, unruly queer dance-theatre performance that turns the theatre into a hospital — and asks what it really means to care.
Blending movement, spoken word, live singing, humour, clowning and audience participation, it explores our bodies, vulnerability, ageing, illness, queerness and the systems that shape our lives. Who gets cared for? Who is expected to care? And whose bodies are valued?
Drawing on artist Bert Roman’s experience as both a dance artist and former NHS nurse, the show invites us to laugh, move, question and imagine care differently.
Artist Bert Roman said:
“Movement has always been at the centre of my life, but my understanding of it changed profoundly when I began working as an NHS nurse. I spent years caring for people living with cancer and supporting patients and their families through some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.
Working in healthcare taught me things that I could never have learned in a dance studio. It changed my understanding of the body, vulnerability, touch, responsibility and care. It also made me think differently about choreography.
I began to see care itself as a kind of movement—a series of gestures, rhythms, repetitions and relationships through which we hold one another. For me, these different worlds are not separate.”
