April 1, 2022 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Dementia-Friendly Facilitation Training

Friday 1st April, 3:30 – 5 pm.

This interactive training session will offer insights into dementia-friendly arts facilitation through an interactive and discussion-led workshop.

Following a discussion on dementia and a presentation on positive language use, this training session will provide techniques for providing person-centred arts activities for people living with dementia. We will explore ways to develop activities for both virtual and in-person delivery, for use within both hospital and residential settings, with specific interactive examples.

This session will cover the following areas:

  • An outline of dementia and dementia-friendly practice
  • The importance of positive language and tips for communication
  • The difference between dementia and delirium
  • Techniques for online arts-based facilitation and digital practice shared through our experience of working in residential and hospital settings
  • An opportunity to engage in a practical example workshop and hybrid practice
  • Learnings from the Innovating Knowledge Exchange project which works in collaboration with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and One Housing Association

This event will be run by Leanne Twidale and Ellen Wilson.

Leanne Twidale is a current fellow in Applied Theatre in Dementia at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (CSSD) and is in the process of creating a social enterprise to deliver arts activities for adults living with dementia with Ellen. She also has an MA in Applied Theatre from CSSD.

Ellen Wilson is a Fellow in Applied Theatre in Dementia at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, where she delivers creative projects for people living with dementia in both hospital and social care settings. She has previously worked in the charity sector, delivering arts activities for people living with dementia and their companions, working alongside arts organisations and facilitators, and training arts facilitators to deliver dementia-friendly workshops. Alongside Leanne, she is currently developing a social enterprise that will continue to deliver exciting creative projects for people living with dementia.

This session will be recorded. If you do not wish to be recorded, feel free to keep your camera off, enter any questions in the chat, and edit your Zoom name if you prefer to remain anonymous. You can request a copy of the recording.
