Calling question: What role can the arts, arts organisations and arts workers play in eradicating racism and building more inclusive communities?

Context for the question & who the event is for:

This event will explore how the participatory theatre sector can support Anti-Racism through our arts practice and promote diversity and inclusion in workshop and creative settings.

Join guest speakers to hear about how their work addresses inequality, diversity and access to the arts. These presentations will aim to provoke thinking around your own arts practice.

Speakers:

Eugene Skeef is a percussionist, composer, poet, educationalist and broadcaster who cut his teeth as an anti-apartheid activist alongside Steve Biko in the Black Consciousness Movement. Eugene has led innovative creative projects that straddle a spectrum of art forms, including community music, contemporary dance theatre and children’s storytelling. He also works in conflict resolution, acts as a consultant on cultural development and teaches creative leadership.

Juliana Pinhiero Landim is the Artistic Director and Co-Founder of Katumba, a community drumming & movement project. Talented in percussion, movement and mindfulness practices, she is Liverpool’s only resident Brazilian in the field. Since moving to the UK, Juliana has focused on using culture as tool for community development, working to develop projects in Liverpool’s underserved areas. Juliana defies and challenges stereotypes as a mixed race, queer, migrant woman at the helm of an International organisation.

Maleehah Hussain is a member of Common Wealth, a theatre company in Bradford making site-specific work that addresses concerns of our times. They believe theatre should belong to everyone – as audience, participants and as protagonists. She is proud to be a co-director of Peaceophobia; part car-show, part-theatre, the show asks: how do you find peace in a world that tells you who you are? Peaceophobia is an unapologetic response to rising Islamophobia around the world. Maleehah is currently studying midwifery at University of Central Lancashire.

Event Format: Open Spaces are participant-led events where the agenda and discussion are driven by those in the room. At the beginning of the event guest speakers will introduce the key ideas, principles and practices behind the theme of the event and offer provocations for discussion. Together we will set the agenda and you will be able to move freely between conversations.

Length: Provocations and Q&A with guest speakers will last an hour, and after a short break the Open Space agenda will be decided and discussion will be opened.
