Windrush 75 Performance Comission:

Job Summary

Newham Council are looking for an artist or arts organisation to lead on the creation of a performance piece as part of their Windrush 75 programme.

Job Description

2023 sees the 75th anniversary of the HMT Empire Windrush arriving in Britain on 22 June.

Newham Council is planning a series of activities taking place throughout the year which will mark this historic occasion and highlight Newham’s Windrush stories, as well as raise awareness of the contribution the Windrush Generation and their descendants made to Newham and UK society and culture.

Project Brief

We are looking for a cultural organisation to develop, manage and deliver a high-quality live performance piece based on the experiences and stories of the Windrush Generation, which will be informed by local people. This can be interpreted through different performance mediums including acting, dance, music and storytelling. The piece needs to be developed in consultation with people of the Windrush Generation and their descendants, and the artistic team needs to engage artists of Caribbean descent.

The piece needs to be adaptable so it can be performed in non-traditional spaces such as schools, care homes and libraries. Alongside performances, the organisation will need to deliver workshops that educate younger residents about Windrush and support reminiscence and storytelling with older generations. The council can provide support in creating links with local education and community organisations, and connecting with social care providers and older people’s programmes and groups.

This project needs to be delivered by the end of August 2023 and take place in Newham.
