Bromley by Bow Centre Annual Review 2023

It undeniably has been a tough year for communities up and down the country – also in Bromley by Bow.  Many people are struggling to meet even basic needs, grappling with loneliness and mental ill health. The effects of Covid are still being felt and the cost-of-living crisis has added to the pressures felt by people every day. And yet, the resilience and determination of local people inspires us as we work together to address issues, find solutions, build assets and develop opportunities that bring people together. Some highlights from the report:

  • We supported over 5,623 unique individuals in many different ways, many of whom have transformed their lives and that of their families
  • People we supported reported a 39% improvement in their overall wellbeing
  • Through our work, households accessed £4.7 million in entitled income
  • We awarded 213 accredited qualifications, from English language to health improvement, and supported 51 people into sustained employment
  • We incubated 5 new social businesses to access £100,000 of social investment

We remain recognised, nationally and internationally, for our innovative approach of integrated support across health and wellbeing –  highlighted as an exemplar by national policymakers and visited by over 2,000 decision-makers, taking learning back to their own communities and countries.

Our staff team and volunteers have gone above and beyond to maintain services in a context of growing need and shrinking resources, and ensure the Centre remains a warm and welcoming place for people to connect, learn, grow and enjoy. I am so grateful for their dedication.

In a context where our work is more needed than ever, 2024 will see a significant milestone for the Bromley by Bow Centre –  the 40th anniversary of our foundation. From small beginnings in 1984, we have achieved recognition as one of the pioneers of social prescribing worldwide and, locally, as a hub for the community and provider of life-changing services at the heart of one of London’s most challenged boroughs.
