Un Decade of Healthy Ageing Process Report 2021-2023

free new resource, co-produced by people living with dementia, sharing good practice guidelines for how we talk about dementia.

These guidelines have been created by a Review Panel of people living with dementia, working alongside Innovations in Dementia (iD). The guidelines aim to help people portray dementia respectfully and without compromise, both in language and imagery.

Eight people living with dementia across the UK came together to form a Review Panel. They attended three Zoom workshops, facilitated by iD Director Philly Hare, in which they discussed both language and images. The use of stimuli such as actual press cuttings and media images created a lively debate, which focused particularly on how the ‘wrong’ language and images makes people feel.

Although these guidelines are aimed primarily at the media, KYN and Innovations in Dementia are confident that they will be relevant and helpful to many others – for example, to families, care services, health services, businesses, advertisers and policy makers.
