Comfort, context, and curiosity in The Hospital

A child’s first visit to a hospital has the potential to be an unsettling one, full of new people with strange equipment, in a place where they will not know what to expect or what is expected of them. In these situations, an age-appropriate work of non-fiction can be helpful, providing explanations and context for the child. However, most children’s books about hospitals will also need to educate and entertain a wide audience of young readers while also being sensitive to the concerns of prospective patients. The Hospital: The Inside Story, by Christle Nwora and illustrated by Ginnie Hsu, manages to balance the needs of these two audiences elegantly, providing an informative introduction to the world of medicine while also helping to soothe the fears and guide the expectations of those children who may be worried about either their own medical issues or those of someone close to them.
