Free training for cultural practitioners and artists

New Town Culture commission artists and creative organisations to work within the spaces and systems of social care. We hope that our work results in more creative practitioners working within this area.

We are aware that many of us as creative practitioners know little about to work with young people who have experience of the social care system. For this reason, we are offering 3 free training sessions.

These are led by Professor Claudia Bernard. Claudia is a Professor of Social Work and Head of Postgraduate Research in the Department of Social, Therapeutic and Community Studies at Goldsmiths University. Claudia is a qualified social worker and, has worked in local authority children and families social work and has retained this interest in her research and teaching. Her general interests lie in the areas of social work with children and families, gender-based violence, critical race theory, equalities and social justice.

We are excited to be collaborating with Claudia to run the following sessions specifically for artists and creative organisations:

  • Intersectional Identities in Social Care, 30 September 9.30- 12.30pm
  • Safeguarding in Cultural Organisations, 4 November 9.30- 12.30pm
  • What is useful for children and young people who have care journeys?, 2 December 9.30- 12.30pm

The sessions are free but places are limited. Please email newtownculture@lbbd.gov.uk as soon as possible to confirm which you’d like to attend. There is a focus on recruitment of artists / organisations from the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.

Sessions are taking place in Barking Learning Centre, Barking, IG11 7NB.
