‘Performance and the Maternal’ Research Project

Art enables discussion about difficult and diverse mother stories.
Maternal performance can make places and make communities.

Through a study of maternal performance, Performance and the Maternal aims to gain a better understanding of the maternal condition. It is motivated by a desire to learn more about the circumstances under which mothers/artists create work as well as the situations in which that work is perceived. The work’s central idea is that through listening to artists’ carefully created stories about motherhood, we might learn more about what it is to be a mother. This information can assist us in finding community, better supporting women and mothers, and improving and improving services and policies for mothers.
